Q & A on Our Boxing Lessons, Gym, Equipment & More

Getting Started

I don't know anything about boxing. How do I know Classic Boxing is for me?

You’ll never know unless you give it a try!

This is exactly what the Trial Session is for.

I've done some boxing before. How do I know Classic Boxing Coach is for me?

It’s the same answer we give the beginners: You’ll never know unless you give it a try!

Sign-up for a Trial Session and see what you think.

How do I schedule a Trial Session?

  1. Log-in to our system
  2. Use the appointment widget to find a convenient time or browse the schedule and select a time that works for you.
  3. Check-out to Book the Trial Session Appointment.
  4. Receive the email confirmation.

What equipment do I need to start?

Initially, you will need boxing gloves and hand wraps.

If you don’t have these however, don’t worry – you can use our loaners. This way we can ensure you get better value for your money when purchasing your first set of gear.

Can I just stop by and visit the facility?

Generally speaking, no. Our facility is private and we don’t provide walk-in services. Of course, no one can stop you from stopping by anyways, but it’s not recommended for a few reasons.

  1. We operate mainly by appointment. When we have no appointments, we’re closed – thus you run the risk of stopping by when no one is here.
  2. Assuming we are there, we’re likely conducting training for other athletes – and therefore wouldn’t be able to receive you properly or show you around, etc.

So – if you decide to stop by, you need to call ahead or log in and schedule your visit — and ask for Chuck when you arrive.

Do you coach weight training as well?

You bet!

We can also provide agility/speed training, power development, nutrition, success coaching, you-name-it etc. It all depends on the individual athletes goals, aptitudes and deficits.

What certifications do you have?

All of our staff members have been certified as personal trainers by nationally recognized organizations in addition to being certified in their individual area of specialty – whether it’s boxing, nutrition, or otherwise.

What kind of results can I expect?

Program participants can expect to see improved confidence and performance under pressure, faster reflexes, greater speed, and increased awareness, endurance and strength and, of course, weight-loss.

Do you have an age limit for your programs?

We don’t have a lower age limit per se, but – in general – we tend to work with adults and young adults. That being said we do work with some youngsters.

As long as the athlete is coachable, comfortable and mature enough to follow directions, etc. – we’d be happy to do a Trial Session to see whether there is a good fit.

There is no upper age limit.

What kind of packages/memberships do you offer?

We offer private and semi-private instruction as single-sessions, 5-10-25 session packages, and 3 or 6 month contracts and/or an individually crafted custom programs.

Once the original monthly contract term is fulfilled, the instruction continues on a month-to-month basis. If you prefer not to continue on a month-to-month basis, you may simply opt out by letting us know before the end of your contract term or, if after the end of your contract term, with 30-days written notice.

Details are provided at the conclusion of your Trial Session.

What makes a good boxing student?

  1. Try – Be willing to fail – this is called “learning”.
  2. Trust – This is not our first rodeo – which is why you found us.
  3. Think – It’s part of the learning process… usually.
  4. Team – Respect your peers. You will learn from them and they will learn from you.
  5. Time – Have patience. Put in the work. Earn it.

Next Steps

What are hand-wraps and why do I need them?

A hand-wrap is a strip of cloth used by boxers (and participants in other combat sports) to protect the hand and wrist against injuries induced by punching.

It is usually wrapped securely around the wrist, the palm, and the base of the thumb, where it serves to both maintain the alignment of the joints, and to compress and lend strength to the soft tissues of the hand during the impact of a punch.

What kind of hand-wraps should I get?

You should get the kind that best secures and supports your hand.

Most people prefer 180-inch semi-elastic hand-wraps. That’s what I carry. However, some people prefer more or less elasticity and/or length. Single weave gauze and tape probably provides the best support, but because gauze and tape are not easily reusable, most people opt for the cloth variety that secures with a velcro patch. Your local sporting goods store may have hand-wraps but like most boxing gear, quality wraps are usually purchased from the gym or online. Read the reviews if shopping online.

Nowadays, some people use a gel-filled glove-type wrap – presumably for their convenience. However, these are disfavored. While they provide some padding for the knuckles, they do not secure or support the joints and small bones in the hand.

How do I wrap my hands?

Everyone wants to know the right way to wrap their hands. The right way, however, is wrapping your hands such that your hands get the support they need.

There are a number of acceptable ways to wrap your hands. Since no two people have the same hands, you must listen to your hands – and make adjustments if necessary.

That being said, your coach will wrap your hands until you figure out his or her formula. YouTube is not a bad place to get ideas, but keep in mind there is quite a bit of bad information out there.

All decent wraps will, at a minimum, cover the following points:

1. Support the wrist
2. Support the thumb
3. Pad the knuckles
4. Support the small bones on the back of the hand

What kind of gloves should I get?

The kind that fits your hand. it’s blunt, but it’s true!

This is a slightly more complicated issue. One for which there isn’t enough room for here. I’d advise you NOT to rush out and purchase something from a local retailer. See what your gym offers and ask your coach for guidance since most quality boxing gear is purchased sight-unseen from online retailers.

That being said, generally speaking, most adult males get 16-oz bag gloves. Likewise, most adult women start with slightly smaller bag gloves (12 or 14 oz), but quite a few start with 16-oz gloves as well.

The key is to get a style and shape that fits YOU.

What kind of shoes should I wear?

For now, wear the ‘gym shoes’ you’ve got.

Some gyms have specific policies about what kind of shoes can be worn where, so whether or not you’ll need special shoes initially depends on the gym.

If you’ve got shoes with very low profile or nondescript tread pattern, that may make pivoting and shuffling around a bit easier but if you don’t have decent gloves & wraps yet, don’t stress about shoes. Eventually, you probably will want to get boxing or wrestling shoes which allow omni-directional movement more easily.

What about sparring?

When the time is right – you can if you want to, but you don’t have to.

What I need to see before anyone starts sparring:

  1. Enough technical proficiency to know that you can participate meaningfully;
  2. Enough fitness and control to know that you can participate safely; and
  3. Enough familiarity and personality to help you manage.

Do I need a mouthpiece and headgear?

If you are sparring, yes – unless you are an Elite Level Amateur registered with USA Boxing.

Before that, no. However, I suggest that you get used to your mouthpiece by wearing it during practice a bit before you begin sparring.

Your coach will help you obtain appropriate gear.

What if I don't want to compete?

Even though you may choose to spar, you might not be interested in competing. That’s no problem.  We would hope, however, that you would still be willing to help prepare and support those who are interested in competing.

Although we compete as individuals, we prepare as a team.

What if I do want to compete?

If you do want to compete – then we will get you ready!

You will have to register with USA Boxing, which will include some paperwork, a doctor’s visit, your birth certificate, some passport photos and, you guessed it, fees! Woo-hoo!

For those of you over 40, USA Boxing has a Master’s Division and, believe it or not, there are other older men and women learning to box and getting their first amateur bouts. It’s never too late!

Important Policies

What are the rules with regard to the Training Center?

We don’t have many – perhaps because they are mostly common sense, but here are a few I can explicitly lay out.

  1. Put away your toys! Even if your trainer helps set it up, do your part to keep the place clean and orderly. Besides, your mamma doesn’t work here and they aren’t going to put themselves away.
  2. Prevent germ warfare. Use the sanitizing spray on anything you made juicy. That sounds gross, because it is. Wash your hands, especially if you or those around you haven’t been feeling tip-top. And if you have the plague, stay home!
  3. Wear proper attire. Please don’t wear jeans or flip-flops (I mean, really?). And while everyone is seriously very impressed – please put your shirt back on. Although, once your sweat has burned a hole through that favorite t-shirt of yours… consider getting new one. Thanks. 😉
  4. If you don’t know how to use it, ask. Most of our equipment is fairly simple and self-explanatory but “safety first”. Also, there are more effective uses than others and we’re here to help you get more bang-for-your-buck. Nonetheless, we appreciate your creativity.
  5. Be friendly and positive. Greet the new person. Encourage the athlete who is digging deep. Encourage the athlete who is lagging today. We’re here to help make everyone feel better, not just you – so vent if you must, but don’t be a downer. “wah waahhhhh” (sad trombone) Keep it positive!

What is the Cancellation Policy?

Commitment to Results: We only work with those who are serious about their training. There will be effort involved and it will be challenging at times. In order to certify your commitment you are required to show up for EVERY workout – unless you go online to reschedule or cancel with a good reason. This is to ensure you give it your best effort and get the results that all the Classic Boxing Coach clients get. If you don’t show for a scheduled workout you will still be charged as a penalty. We have no desire or inclination to charge this – this is just to keep you accountable and on track to getting your results if you decide to continue.

Thus, we enforce a 24-hour cancellation policy for all appointments. In order to cancel or reschedule your appointment please log-in online and do so at least 24-hours in advance.

What is the Return Policy?

All sales are final; No refunds, transfers or exchanges.

What is the Refund Policy?

All sales are final; No refunds, transfers or exchanges.

What is the Absence Policy?

For shorter absences, athletes can re-schedule their workouts using the online scheduling platform. Workouts must be rescheduled for the same week in which they are credited.

In some instances it may be possible to reallocate weekly training sessions to other weeks. However accommodation is not guaranteed, is in the sole discretion of Classic Boxing Coach and must be made in advance of your departure with a few weeks notice.

For extended absences, our “Freeze” policy allows you to temporarily suspend your membership in accordance with the following terms:

You may freeze your monthly membership once per contractual year for a minimum of one (1) month and a maximum of three (3) consecutive months in one-month increments for a fee of $25 per month, payable in advance. Members within their first contract term of membership will be charged regular monthly dues until they complete the length of that contracts obligation, after which they will be charged the freeze fee in full.

The expiration dates on packages of pre-purchased services cannot be tolled or extended without a medical necessity demonstrated by a doctor’s note. A diagnosis or other sensitive personal information need not be stated, only that the cessation of physical activity and necessary duration need be prescribed.

Any and all contractual deviations must be made in advance. In no case shall monthly memberships or expiration dates be tolled, extended or frozen for dates and times already in the past.
